Ministry of Health, Iceland


The Ministry of Health in Iceland was established on January 1st 1970 in accordance with Act no. 73/1969. The Ministry has the responsibility for administration and policy making of health and health insurance issues in Iceland as prescribed by law, regulations and other directives. Among the issues that the Ministry deals with are:

  • Public Health
  • Patient rights
  • Operation of Hospitals, Health Centers and other providers of health services
  • Promotion of Information Technology in the health services in Iceland
  • Pharmaceutical affairs
  • Health Insurances

Minister of Health in Iceland

The Minister of Health in Iceland is Álfheiður Ingadóttir, born in Reykjavik on May 1st 1951.

Álfheiður Ingadóttir has been a member of Althingi since 2007 and was appointed Minister of Health on October 1st 2009.
